>>Green Bay Packers Cancel Practice Over Kenosha Police Shooting
(Green Bay, WI) — The Green Bay Packers postponed and then cancelled practice Thursday in response to the Wisconsin police shooting of Jacob Blake (Thursday). Coach Matt LaFleur told reporters, “what’s going on in Kenosha is so much more important than football.” LaFleur added, “not one guy said they didn’t want to practice today, we were having conversations, and with raw emotion there it’s tough to focus on football so I made the decision that hey, we are not going to go today.” The Jets, Colts, Bears, Titans, Washington and Broncos also postponed or canceled Thursday practices. The Saints practiced, but the players wore Blake’s name on the front or crown of their helmets where they usually have their own names during camp.
>>Big Ten Considers Football Season Starting Thanksgiving Week
(Chicago, IL) — A rapid antigen test for COVID-19 could be a key factor in the Big Ten Conference starting a delayed football season. The league’s coaches have come up with a plan for an eight-game season, conference games only, that would start Thanksgiving week. Players for the Nebraska Cornhuskers just filed a lawsuit in an effort to overturn the conference decision to call off or delay the 2020 season. Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez and other league officials have said it is important to be able to get rapid coronavirus test results if games are going to be played. The FDA this week gave approval to the test designed by Abbott Labs that offers results in just 15 minutes.
>>NBA Players Agree To Resume Playoff Action, Possibly Today
(Lake Buena Vista, FL) — After forcing the cancellation of six playoff games as a protest over the Jacob Blake shooting in Kenosha, NBA players are now apparently open to returning to action. There had been discussions about just canceling the rest of the season. The courts at the NBA’s Walt Disney World campus have been quiet for a couple of days while conversations centered on police brutality and racial justice. The Milwaukee Bucks started the ball rolling when the players declined to take the court Wednesday for a game against Orlando. All 13 teams remaining in the playoffs have agreed to move forward, but there is no firm plan yet. Games could resume today (Friday).
>>Even If High Schools Move Forward With Fall Sports … Who’s Going To Referee?
(Stevens Point, WI) — Some Wisconsin school districts are running into an unexpected problem as they try to move forward with fall sports. There was already a shortage of referees and many of them in Wisconsin are deciding they don’t want to call games during the coronavirus pandemic. A significant percentage of Wisconsin sports officials are older, making the COVID-19 threat for them much more serious. The refs who are willing to work games will likely take precautions like wearing a mask and using an electronic whistle.
>>$200K Donation Means All Milwaukee Students Will Have Laptop, Internet Access
(Milwaukee, WI) — The Brewers Community Foundation is working with American Family Insurance to donate 200 thousand dollars to the Milwaukee Public Schools #ConnectMilwaukee initiative. This means all students will have internet access and a laptop. That kind of equipment is needed while the district continues with virtual learning. This is the largest corporate donation to the program and allows the initiative to top its original fundraising goal of a million dollars. People who want to join the fundraising effort can contribute to the Brewers Community Foundation – or, they can send their money directly to the school district.
