Legislation Provisions to Relax Company Verification Checks for State Credits

Some provisions in Wisconsin Republicans’ lame-duck legislation
would relax verification checks for companies vying for state credits.

Current
law require the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation to verify tax credit
recipients payroll and employment data every year to ensure they qualify for
the breaks – but the new legislation would eliminate those requirements.

WEDC
would be required to independently verify a sample of information from
recipients. Companies would also have to send a statement to the WEDC to
confirm the accuracy of the information.

The agency says it can’t verify all
recipients’ information, and has been verifying samples for the last three
years.

They say the legislation simply puts what they’ve practice onto paper,
and that they’ve been trying to change the official language since earlier this
year.
