FDL City Council Approves Special Use Permit For New Kwik Trip Store
The Fond du Lac City Council last night unanimously approved a special use permit that will allow Kwik Trip to build a convenience store on the former Walgreen’s Drug Store site on North Main Street. Charles Mauch expressed some concerns before the Council took its vote about the high volume of traffic at the intersection. Community Development Director Wayne Rollin noted the store has been vacant since 2007, but when it was a Walgreen’s it was a very busy property and there were no traffic problems. Council President Sam Meyer also wanted to know about what steps the company was taking to protect the groundwater in the event of an underground leak. A company official said pipes are double-walled and computer monitored. After the vote Meyer said the $2.8 million project has several benefits for the City (including expanding the tax base and creating 20 to 25 new jobs).
FDL Police, Fire And DPW Commended For Work During Standoff And Fire
Just before the Fond du Lac City Council wrapped up its meeting Wednesday night City Council President Sam Meyer commended the police, fire and public works departments on the teamwork they displayed during Monday’s fire and standoff incidents. He says headlines the next day about the standoff incident ending peacefully is thanks in large part to the cooperation exhibited by those departments. While the police and fire departments efforts were more obvious to the public, Police Chief Bill Lamb and Fire Chief Peter O’Leary thanked the public works department. Chief O’Leary said there was a water main break to deal with during the fire and the DPW also pumped out the basement of the home so they could investigate the scene. Chief Lamb noted DPW crews put up barricades on the streets to keep the public safe during the standoff and isolate the situation.
Former Dodge County Sheriff’s Son Arrests Burglar At Father’s Home
(WBEV-Beaver Dam)-One person was arrested at gunpoint Wednesday afternoon during a breaking and entering at the Fox Lake home of former Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls. The deputy who nabbed the suspect is the sheriff’s newly deputized son, Taylor Nehls. Sheriff Pat Ninmann says dispatch received a call around noon from off-duty deputy Taylor Nehls who had stopped by the house for personal items and interrupted the burglary in progress. The suspect reportedly had in his possession a loaded .380 handgun that belonged to Todd Nehls and Taylor Nehls held him at bay until officers arrived on scene. Taylor Nehls just finished his field training two weeks ago and Ninmann commended his actions saying there could have been a deadly ending to today’s incident but Taylor proved himself as a great deputy. Todd Nehls says he is proud of his son and noted that he has great instincts. The former sheriff had an opportunity to ask the suspect a few questions. Todd Nehls says once the suspect realized who who’s home he was in, he said he made a big mistake. Nehls says that is putting it mildly.

More Juveniles Will Be Housed In FDL County Juvenile Center
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department will be picking up some addition jail revenue through the housing of juveniles from outside the county in their juvenile detention facility next year. Chief Deputy Mark Strand says over the years they’ve lost revenue because the state no longer contracts to house as many inmates in the County Jail. He says during their hay days they were making $2.5 million on housing inmates for the state. He says they will be adding juveniles from Winnebago County to their juvenile facility after the first of the year because Outagamie County will no longer be housing them. Strand says it’s an attractive situation for Winnebago County because Fond du Lac County has one of only 13 juvenile centers in the state and it’s medically certified. Strand says they are also only one of five jails in the state that’s medically certified.
