John H. Buechel

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John H. Buechel, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left us peacefully on June 5, 2026, at the age of 74. John was born on November 18, 1951, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to the late Leander and Margaret (Kraus) Buechel.
John spent his formative years in St. Peter, and graduated from Goodrich High School in 1971. It was here that he first learned the values of hard work and perseverance, which would guide him throughout his life. Following his education, John embarked on a fulfilling career as a machinist at F. Ziegler Enterprises, where he dedicated 35 years of service. His work was marked by precision and integrity, earning him respect and admiration from his colleagues.
In 1974, John married the love of his life, Barbara Burg, in New Holstein, Wisconsin. Together, they built a loving home, raising four wonderful daughters—Sherry, Janice, Wendy, and Pamela. Just days before his passing, John and Barbara celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary, a milestone that speaks to their enduring love and partnership.
John’s life was enriched by his involvement in the St. Peter community, where he was a long-time member of Holy Family Catholic Community and parishioner at St. Peter Catholic Church. He was also a valued member of the Town of Taycheedah Board of Appeals, President of the St. Peter Cemetery Board, Parish Council, and St. Peter Athletic Club during its expansion. His passion for antiques and tinkering with tools was well-known, and he could often be found in his workshop, bringing new life to old treasures. John’s gift of gab was legendary; he could engage anyone in conversation for hours, leaving them with a smile and a story to cherish. He was a proud fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers.
Family was the cornerstone of John’s life. He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara; daughters Sherry (Jesse) Rautenberg, Janice Schroeder (special friend Rick Stuart), Wendy (Jamie) Schmitz, and Pamela Buechel (Matthew Rawlsky); and his treasured grandchildren Brayden and Brinley Rautenberg, Hadley and Evan Schroeder, and Larsen Schmitz. John’s legacy also lives on through his siblings, Mary (Gary) Pauly, Ginny (Paul) Ditter, Joe (Mary) Buechel, Fran (Kay) Buechel, Lori (Dan) Diederichs, and Irene (John) Petrie; and brother-in-law Warren Wagner. He will be dearly missed by his many loving nieces, nephews, close friends, and the countless acquaintances who had the privilege of knowing him.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Leander and Margaret Buechel; his sisters, Dolores Ford and Theresa Wagner; his parents-in-law Benjamin and Christina Burg; several cherished family members, including David Ford, Scott Ford, Tracy Ford-Robydek, Timothy Ditter, Steve Karls, Timothy Costello, and Paul Burg; and close friend Bob Petrie.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Visitation will be Monday, June 8th from 4-7pm at Zacherl Funeral Home in Fond du Lac and again, on Tuesday, June 9th at St. Peter Catholic Church on visitation starting at 9 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am, with burial to follow at St. Peter Cemetery.
Though he is no longer with us, John’s spirit will continue to inspire us all, reminding us to cherish each moment and to love deeply.
We would like to extend a special thank you to all the wonderful nurses and healthcare providers who worked with John throughout the years. Your kindness and support have meant so much to John and his family.
