Phone Spoofing Warning
An administrator with the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is cautioning people to be careful of scammers who use phone spoofing. That’s the practice where the number on your caller ID looks like it is a local number. Frank Frassetto says it may look local, but that is not the case at all. He recommends letting the call go to voicemail. He says if it is not legitimate they aren’t likely to leave a message. In a recent phone spoof a scammer used a number that came up on caller ID as the Oshkosh Police Department. The caller said unless the person paid back taxes to the IRS they would be arrested and their bachelor’s degree would be taken back.
