St. Mary’s Springs Academy won their 13th state championship
in school history with a 37-28 win over Darlington in the WIAA Division Six
State Championship at Madison’s
Camp Randall Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The Ledgers jumped out to a 21-0 lead on TDs by Blake Bauer, Sam Spranger
and Mark Austin on a “Hook N Ladder” late in the first half.  Darlington
then scored 3 TDs in a 1 minute and 46 second span to even it at 21.  The Ledger took a 24-21 lead into the
halftime locker room when kicker Zach Hintze boomed a 49 yard field goal.  That was a Division 6 title game record and
tied Bruce Olson’s overall state title game record of 49 yards that he kicked
for Westby in the 1985 D4 title game.
Hintze added a 27 yard field goal in the 3rd quarter to make
it 27-21 going to the 4th quarter.
Darlington took a 28-27 lead on a 14
yard Hunter Johnson touchdown run.
Hintze then banged home a 39 yard field goal with 4:19 left to make it
30-28.  Luke Gellings caught a 26 yard TD
pass from Blake Bauer to secure the Ledgers 5th WIAA state football
title. St. Mary’s Springs also has 8 WISAA
titles.  The Ledgers year ends at 14-0. Darlington (12-2) is the state runner up for the 2nd
straight year.
