The Green Bay Packers grinded out a 22-9 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Lambeau Field.  Neither team could score a touchdown until Aaron Rodgers hit James Jones on an 83-yard TD late in the third quarter.  Combine that with five Mason Crosby field goals and Green Bay picks up the division win. Jones caught 4 passes for 127 yards along with that TD.  Eddie Lacy ran for 99 yards as well.   Crosby’s five field goals tied Ryan Longwell’s single game team record.  The Packers caught a break when Calvin Johnson didn’t play for Detroit because of a knee injury.  The win evens the Packers record at 2-2 as they head to Baltimore next Sunday.

The Packers win didn’t come without a price.  Clay Matthews broke his thumb.  We’ll learn more about that today.  If he can cast it, he might be able to play but if he’s needs surgery he could miss a significant part of the season.  Linebacker Brad Jones also left the game with a hamstring injury.  His backup Robert Francois was lost for the season with a torn Achilles tendon.

Around the NFC North, the Bears were hammered by the Saints 26-18 and the Vikings had the week off.  Minnesota is going to sign former Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman who was cut earlier this week.

Other highlights from Week 5 of the NFL season…Tony Romo threw for 506 yards and 5 TDs but Peyton Manning threw for 414 yards as Denver outlasted Dallas 51-48…Two unbeatens go down as the Colts stop Seattle 34-27 and the Bengals win at New England 13-6.  Kansas City is 5-0 with a 26-17 win over the Titans.  Sunday night say the 49ers blow out Houston 34-3 and Oakland was a 27-17 winner of San Diego.

Alabama and Oregon continue to hold the top two spots in both college football polls.

The Pittsburg Pirates are one win away from the National League Championship Series after a 5-3 win over St. Louis.  The Pirates can win the series if they stop St. Louis this afternoon at 2pm. The Dodgers also took a 2-1 series lead with a 13-6 win over the Braves.  Game 4 is tonight at 8:30pm.  Oakland plays Detroit today at Noon while Boston and Tampa Bay play at 5pm.
