Sturgeon spearers continue despite poor ice conditions

Sturgeon spearing totals continue to come in at a trickling pace this season.

Yesterday was day 4 of the 2024 season, one quarter of the way through the 16 day season and 24 fish were brought in including two juvenile females, seven adult females and nine males bringing the total up to 180 sturgeon speared this season on Winnebago and the up river lakes. This is only 10% of the caps set for the season.

The hot spot for sturgeon spearing this year continues to be the southwest portion of Lake Winnebago which has seen 92 of the 134 fish speared on the lake.

A warmer than normal winter has created poor ice conditions this year, keeping most spearers off the ice, but the forecast calls for more seasonable temperatures for the remainder of the week which should at least maintain current ice conditions through at least the season’s half way point.
