Two kayakers still missing after venturing out off Washington Island this weekend

Search crews from across Door County continue their efforts to find two 20-year-old kayakers who disappeared near Washington Island over the weekend. Authorities say the pair went onto the water Saturday evening without life jackets, and when they hadn’t returned, an extensive search involving boats, drones, aircraft and ground teams was started.

Responders were first called to the area of Wickman Drive at about 6:48 p.m. on Saturday.

While regional fire and mutual aid water search operations had to be suspended just before 10 p.m. due to nightfall, the U.S. Coast Guard continued their efforts until 2:30 a.m. then resumed at 7 a.m. Sunday.

While authorities gave descriptions of the two, no other information such as names or where they were from was issued.
