Video released of deputy killing loose pig in Door County
An update to a story we brought you Monday about a Door County Sheriff’s deputy shooting and killing a 300 pound pig that was loose in the southern portion of the county last Friday.
The Sheriff has reviewed body camera footage and stands by the decision of the deputy to euthanize the animal based on it’s proximity to a busy state highway, even though a local animal rescue group had a trailer on the way to try and rescue the pig. Because the trailer was still 25 minutes away, the officer shot the pig with two shots from a high powered rifle in front of one of the rescuers.
In an effort to stay transparent in the situation, the sheriff’s office has released the body camera footage of the incident. The sheriff’s office says it’s mission is to protect residents, and that is what needed to be done to avoid a possible incident with traffic so close.
The department says it’s staff has received threats since the incident. You can see a link to the video here on the Door County Sheriff’s Office YouTube page. Just a fair warning though, it may be graphic to sensitive viewers.
