Wisconsin Spring General Election is here – All eyes on State Supreme Court results

Today is the spring general election. Depending on where you live, your general election for Fond du Lac County ballot may have such races as County Executive, Fond du Lac City Council, Town chairperson, supervisor, treasurer, clerk and constable. Village President and trustee. School boards, school referendums and a state referendum to require voter ID for voting be added as an amendment to the state constitution.

Most notably on the ballot is the election for a State Supreme Court position and election for Superintendent of Public Instruction of Wisconsin.

The race for the Supreme Court has gained national attention as the winner not only will determines the balance of power among justices in the state, but will determine whether the state redraws its congressional districts along lines that end up narrowing or ending the majority that Republicans hold in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Republican Candidate Brad Schimel is up against Democrat Susan Crawford for the 10 year held position.
The position opened up when current justice Ann Walsh Bradley announced she wouldn’t be running for a fourth term.

At the state level, abortion rights, voting rights and the powers of public employee unions could all be in the balance in future court rulings. Currently with a democratic governor, and a republican controlled legislature, there’s a balance of power in the state. If Crawford wins however, the power would swing to the democrats, giving them the almost uncontrolled ability to pass legislation that may go against republican values.

Because of the powerful role the position plays nationally, money from out of state donors has poured in for both candidates. Most notably for Schimel is from Elon Musk, and for Crawford is from George Soros. It’s said this is the most expensive judicial race ever with each side spending over $100 million dollars in the election.

The superintendent of public instruction race is between incumbent Jill Underly and Brittany Kinser.
The position is responsible for managing Wisconsin’s 900,000-student, $9 billion public school system. Incumbent Jill Underly seeks a second four-year term against Brittany Kinser, an education consultant and founder of a state literacy initiative. While the role is considered nonpartisan, Underly has the backing of the state Democratic Party, while Kinser is backed by the state Republican Party.

At a recent rally in Fond du Lac, Kinser critized Underly for not addressing the low scores of our kids in school, rather she altered the way scores are read to falsely inflate the grades of school children.
