3 cent tax per kilowatt-hour added to electric vehicle charging

The Wisconsin Department of Revenue says it will be implementing a new tax on those that charge electric vehicles.

Effective January 1, 2025, an excise tax of 3 cents per kilowatt-hour is due on the electricity delivered or placed into the battery or other energy storage device of an electric vehicle by a Level 1,2 or 3 charger.

The excise tax represents a crucial source of revenue for maintaining Wisconsin’s roadways and infrastructure that is lost when owners of electric vehicles are no longer paying taxes included in the price of gasoline. The Department of Revenue says this makes it a more equitable system in which all drivers contribute to road maintenance costs.
