7 years prison given to man responsible for drug overdose death
On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric J. Toney announced that Judge Andrew Christenson sentenced Shane Billington to 7 years of initial confinement and 9 years of extended supervision after being convicted of second-degree reckless homicide for a fentanyl overdose death conviction, from October 7, 2017. The State recommended a sentence of 10-15 years of initial confinement and 10 years of extended supervision.
District Attorney Toney stated “Fentanyl overdose deaths are devastating and too common, but we must never accept them as normal. A fraction of these overdose deaths makes it to court for a sentencing and when they do, it’s crucial for courts to hold defendants accountable, to serve as deterrent because it will save lives. Especially during the holiday seasons, our hearts go out to all the families that have lost a loved one from fentanyl or drugs.”
This case was investigated by the City of Fond du Lac Police Department and prosecuted by District Attorney Eric Toney.
