Hit-And-Run Semi Causes Sinkhole In Ripon

Ripon authorities had a small crisis on their hands yesterday, Tuesday, September 12, 2023, after a semi knocked over a fire hydrant, breaking an underground water pipe on one of the city’s busier streets.

The incident happened on Griswold street between Newbury and Metoman Streets. Griswold is also known as County Highway E which connects Ripon to Fairwater.

Once the pipe was broke, water began to wash away dirt under Griswold which led to the pavement of the street to cave in creating a large sink hole.

The road was closed at about 7:20 AM which snarled school traffic and morning work commuters.

Public works crews immediately got to work on the situation and the road was reopened later in the afternoon.

The semi that caused the chaos never stopped and Ripon police are asking if anyone has any information or doorbell camera footage of the incident to contact them.
