New details released in crash that killed 19-year-old girl

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt released more information regarding the deadly crash that occurred in the southeast part of the county on the morning of New Years Eve.

As we reported earlier, 19-year-old Taya Grimes was thrown from her vehicle after driving into the ditch off Highway 45 early Sunday morning and then struck and dragged 3 miles by a send vehicle.

Waldschmidt now says that same vehicle may have struck a second person that was also ejected from the initial crash. That 17-year-old Dodge County resident remains in critical condition in a local hospital.

Waldschmidt also said that occupants of both cars involved were coming from an underage drinking party where both alcohol and illegal drugs were being consumed. He said the department was investigating who, if any of the people involved in the crash, consumed either and were not getting full cooperation when asking others that were at the party.

A 19-year-old West Bend man is in custody under suspicion as being the driver that struck the two teens though he hasn’t officially been charged with a crime yet.

Waldschmidt said this was one of the most complex crash investigations that he has seen in 25+ years working at the sheriff’s office and if anyone thinks they may have information on either the party or crash, they should call the sheriff’s office at 920-929-3390 and ask for a detective working on the case.
