Temperature to drop 50 degrees overnight after forecasted record high

Earlier this month we had a first for February in Wisconsin and that was the first tornado ever to touch down in Wisconsin in the month since records have been kept. Today we have a chance for another first, and this one pertains more to Fond du Lac County, and that could be the first time the temperature ever hits 70 in February.

The previous all time high for Fond du Lac County in February was 65 degrees, and that happened on February 23rd of 2017.

With today’s forecasted high of 70, that looks to shatter that record.

These warm temperatures are going to be short lived however, as a strong cold front looks to come crashing over us tonight, causing temperatures to plummet 50 degrees by tomorrow morning.

With the warm temperatures in place out ahead of the front, it will cause the air to become slightly unstable so there will be a chance of some thunderstorms later tonight.
While there is a very slight chance for severe weather here, the better chances of severe weather looks more likely in extreme southeast Wisconsin and into Illinois and Indiana where a couple tornadoes could be possible.

All this commotion is due to a quickly intensifying low pressure system that looks to pass right over southern Wisconsin later tonight. Winds flow counterclockwise around low pressure storm systems, so as the center of the storm approaches from the west, the winds will be from the south, flowing unobstructed from the gulf of Mexico allowing warm, moist air to move over the area. As the low passes us to the east, those winds strengthen and blow from the northwest, ushering in much colder air.

That cold front doesn’t look to hit our area until 7 or 8 PM tonight so we have all day to bask in the warmth before things take a turn for the worse.

As far as precipitation goes, there is a small chance of rain after 7, but those chances increase around 10 tonight. Then the rain changes to snow after 1 AM.
Because the temperature will drop so fast, there is a really good chance that water on untreated roads will freeze, especially bridges and overpasses so use extreme caution if you are going to be driving in the overnight hours.

The cold doesn’t look to hold out for very long though as by Thursday we are back in the 40s.
