Car fire closes northbound lanes of I-41 in Fond du Lac County

Traffic on the northbound side of 41, north of Fond du Lac, needed to be shut down Wednesday, July 10, 2024, while the Eldorado Fire Department battled a vehicle fire.

Around 12:50 in the afternoon, the department as well as officers from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office responded to the fire near Sales Road.

DOT cameras showed smoke coming from the Kia station wagon at the time of the call, but by the time the fire department was able to get on scene, the vehicle was fully involved in flames. The decision was made to shut down traffic on the northbound side so firefighters could safely deal with the fire. The fire also affected southbound traffic, as large amounts of smoke after water was put on the fire, drifted across the southbound lanes, causing traffic to slow.

All of the vehicles occupants were safely able to exit the car, and traffic was reopened about 15 minutes later, but not before traffic was backed up all the way to Highway 23.
