The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office is the latest in the area warning people of scammers spoofing sheriff’s office phone numbers. Phone number spoofing is when a scammer uses software to make a phone number used by the scammer appear to be a legitimate law enforcement agencies phone number to the victim.
In the latest scam attempt, a caller was told they had missed jury duty and had a warrant out for their arrest. To avoid the arrest, they were instructed to deposit $6000 in Bitcoin at a kiosk in Oshkosh.
The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office responded by saying if you have a warrant out for your arrest, they will stop in person to conduct that warrant. They also stated they don’t except non traditional payments such as bitcoin, or gift cards and if someone calls you asking for this, you should simply just hang up.
