IKEA to open second Wisconsin location with new store in Madison

IKEA plans to open a store in Madison this fall. It will be the Swedish retailer’s second location in Wisconsin.

The company is known for its affordable home goods and flat-pack furniture. According to its Thursday announcement, the 54,000-square-foot store will move into Prairie Towne Center mall in Madison.

“Opening a new location in Madison is part of our continued commitment to reaching customers where they are (and) making well-designed, affordable home furnishing solutions more accessible and convenient than ever before,” said IKEA U.S. interim CEO Rob Olson in a statement.

The Madison store’s footprint is much smaller than typical IKEA stores. The company’s existing location in Wisconsin, which opened in Oak Creek in 2018, is nearly 300,000 square feet.

According to the company, the Madison location will have “fully furnished rooms showcasing ‘local living’ solutions tailored to reflect the unique needs, lifestyles and spaces of the Madison community.”

The company said there will be 5,000 products on display in the store, but only 3,000 of those items will be available for purchase there. The rest, including larger pieces like couches and beds, can be ordered online or in the store and delivered or picked up at Madison locations.

The smaller retail location is part of an expansion plan announced by IKEA earlier this year. In March the company said it planned to open 20 new, smaller locations in North America and Europe.
