Richard Melvin Liegl

Richard Melvin Liegl, 80, lovingly known as Dick or Richie by his family, completed his journey on July 11, 2026. He is now at peace and resting in God’s amazing grace. Richard lived with his whole heart, loved without holding back, and was genuine to his core.
Richard was born on June 22, 1946, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, a son to Melvin and Verna Liegl. He was the oldest of five siblings and grew up in Oakfield. Richard married Shirley Ann Brace on June 27, 1970, and raised their family in Fond du Lac. The last event Richard planned was a family celebration dinner for their 56th wedding anniversary on June 27, 2026. He was thankful to have his “Shirl” to share life with for 56 years.
Richard was a hard worker and a proud provider. He was thankful to be employed at Mercury Marine for 42 years. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, tending to his yard and garden, watching sports and spending time with family and friends. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Florida.
As a parent and grandparent, Richard always showed up and beamed with pride. He never missed an opportunity to celebrate with his family and proudly adorned his big smile at countless holidays, birthdays, and graduations. With his wife, he traveled throughout Wisconsin attending his children’s and grandchildren’s hockey, soccer, and football games, as well as golf tournaments, cross country meets, dance recitals, and music performances. He was our “family whistle” and you knew when he was there!
Richard is survived by his loving wife Shirley; his three children: Scott (Ann), Jodi (Scot) Henning, and Josh; his seven grandchildren: AJ (Morgan), Alyna (Zach), Benny (Myah), Sophie, Andrew, Aubrey, and Sam; and his three great-grandsons: James, Logan Richard, and Theodore. He is also survived by his four siblings: Joseph (Holly), Susan Shafer, Lavinia (Hal) Draves, and Melvin Jr. (Donna); his brother-in-law Allan Brace; his Godson Jason (Andrea), many other nieces & nephews and friends that became family.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents Leslie “Gramps” and Lavinia Jagdfeld, his nephew Aaron Draves, his mother and father-in-law Michael and Julia Brace, his sisters-in-law Jan Liegl, Cindi Liegl and Barb Brace, and brothers-in-law Dean Brace and John Shafer.
In his 80 years, it was clear Richard loved well and was well loved. He collected friends as he went through life and truly never met a stranger. He was fortunate to have a wonderful family and friends. He enjoyed all the visits; sharing memories, prayers, and laughs over the years but especially over the past few months. We will miss the twinkle in his eyes, his bold smile, and his sense of humor. He taught us to be strong and thankful, and we will be both in his memory.
Richard and his family were loved and cared for by the SSM Hospice Home of Hope, and Richard was a dedicated bell ringer for many years for the Salvation Army. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the SSM Hospice Home of Hope or the Salvation Army.
To honor and celebrate the life of Richard M. Liegl, a visitation will be held at Zacherl Funeral Home, 875 E Division St, in Fond du Lac, on Friday, July 17, from 2-5 p.m. A memorial service will follow by Father Dave Greenfield at 5 p.m.
