Wisconsin Department of Transportation working to make roads safer

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is highlighting its efforts to make Wisconsin’s roads and transportation systems safer.

WisDOT recently hosted its third annual Safer Together Community Event in Madison, bringing together transportation agencies, law enforcement, safety organizations and members of the public.

The event featured demonstrations and activities focused on transportation safety, including State Patrol K-9s, automated vehicles, drone inspections, work-zone equipment, school bus safety and driver education.

WisDOT says its safety efforts include improved signs to prevent wrong-way driving, the Buckle Up Phone Down campaign, research into reckless driving and pedestrian visibility, and expanded funding for driver education.

The department’s 2026 safety priorities include a work-zone safety pilot program, enforcement of the state’s expanded Move Over law, improvements at highway-rail crossings, motorcycle safety and better visibility for roadside workers.

WisDOT says reducing crashes and injuries is a shared responsibility, with the ultimate goal of reaching zero preventable deaths on Wisconsin roads.
