Wisconsin Family Action supports move to pass Religious Freedom Constitutional Amendment

Wisconsin voters will see a proposed Religious Freedom Constitutional Amendment on the November third ballot.

The group Wisconsin Family Action is urging voters to approve the amendment, saying it would give churches the same ability as other organizations to remain open during a state of emergency.

The group argues that churches should not be treated differently from businesses that the government considers essential during an emergency, saying, “If liquor stores and big-box corporations can remain open during a state of emergency, churches should have the same freedom to gather. Government should not be able to declare a liquor store essential while telling a church that worship is not. This amendment allows churches to make the decision to close or stay open to serve their community during a state of emergency, just as government allows other entities like liquor and big box stores.”

The League of Women Voters is the only organization in Wisconsin opposing the amendment, urging voters to reject the religious liberty amendment “because it would limit government’s ability to restrict religious gatherings….”

The two groups therefore have opposing positions on the proposed constitutional amendment, which voters will decide on November third.
