Cooking fire damages Fond du Lac apartment building

Fond du Lac Fire Rescue is reminding residents about cooking safety after a grease fire Saturday evening, September 12, 2026.

Firefighters were called to an apartment at 388 North Seymour Street around 5:57 p.m. Saturday.

Crews found moderate smoke coming from the apartment and quickly extinguished a fire involving a pan on the stove.

The apartment was occupied, and the resident was alerted by working smoke detectors. The resident tried using a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived, but was unable to completely put out the fire.

Fire officials say grease in the pan caught fire after a burner was accidentally left on following cooking.

The kitchen sustained significant damage and the resident was displaced.

Fire Rescue says the incident is also a reminder of the importance of working smoke detectors, which gave the resident an early warning and allowed them to get out and call for help.
