Agnesian HealthCare Welcomes Dr Bert Callahan
Agnesian HealthCare is welcoming Bert Callahan, MD, an orthopedic & sports medicine physician, to serve at Ripon Medical Center, 845 Parkside Street in Ripon, with Jeffrey Meincke, MD, orthopedic surgeon. He will begin seeing patients in January 2017.
Dr. Callahan has been a fixture in the Beaver Dam, Columbus and Waupun communities for more than 20 years.
As an orthopedic surgeon, he treats the most common bone and joint conditions and injuries in the region.
“After 20 years of practice, I have a great deal of experience in knee and hip replacement, and knee and shoulder arthroscopy,” according to Dr. Callahan. “Additionally, I have treated many patients with hand problems, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger, as well as common adult and pediatric fractures.”
Dr. Callahan earned his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine. After that, he served with the U.S. Army as an officer in the Medical Corps for nine year, including five years of orthopedic surgery at the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. He also served two years as a flight surgeon in Wiesbaden, Germany, and two years as a staff orthopedic surgeon at Bassett Army Community Hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska.
He is board certified in orthopedic surgery, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
“I enjoy most getting to know patients and assisting them on their path to restore function,” Dr. Callahan says. “I appreciate the opportunity to listen to patients and learn about their lives and interests and family. It is very important for patients to be involved in their own care, and to understand fully the problem(s) they are facing, and the options for treatment, including the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment.”
Dr. Callahan’s two main areas of interest within the field of orthopedics are joint replacement and sports medicine.
“Both areas use treatments and techniques very appropriate and available at a community hospital,” he says. “I intend to work diligently with the current staff and culture of Agnesian HealthCare system to ensure that patients are able to continue to have available the most current treatment techniques and technology at their local community hospital.”
Dr. Callahan, and his wife, Debbie, have four children and three grandchildren. He enjoys spending time with his family, friends and church, as well as traveling. He has always had an interest in photography, particularly of sporting events and our local agricultural countryside.
Over the past two years, he has completed four half marathons, four sprint triathlons, and most recently, his first full marathon – the Chicago Marathon.
“It is a privilege to be able to practice orthopedics and I look forward to working with the current professionals within Agnesian HealthCare, and to meeting and getting to know the patients who count on Agnesian HealthCare for their healthcare.”
