BBB Offers Online Shopping Safety Tips for “Cyber Monday”
After “Black Friday” and “Small Business Saturday”, comes
Cyber Monday – which is today, and has become one of the top shopping days of
the year. Consumers spent $7.9 billion on online purchases on Cyber Monday last
year, and those dollar figures are expected to remain high in 2019.
Consumer protection experts caution that online shopping –
even on Cyber Monday – has risks, and say shoppers should be on the lookout for
false advertising and phony websites that try to steal your personal
information.
If you plan on shopping online, the Better Business Bureau
of Wisconsin says its important to shop with trustworthy sellers on secure websites
only, and to keep your antivirus software up to date. The BBB says to also price
check an item before you buy to make sure you’re getting the best deal. It’s
also recommended that shoppers use their credit card to make online purchases,
because it offers more protections against fraud than a debit card does.
Overall, experts say if you find a company that’s selling
the hottest item of the year at a price that seems too good to be true – it probably
is.
