County Highway Worker Nearly Struck By Driver On Cell Phone

A Fond du Lac County Highway worker was nearly hit by an inattentive driver on Highway 23 east of Fond du Lac last week. A Highway Department crew was doing crack sealing work on Hwy 23 from County Highway UU to County Hwy W. A flagman was nearly struck by a car. The flagger saw the car coming and dove into a ditch. Other members of the highway crew looked up and saw the driver was using a cell phone. Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt got an email from a Highway Department supervisor about the incident. Waldschmidt says under state law drivers are not supposed to be using their cell phones in highway construction zones, which this was. Waldschmidt says you couldn’t miss the sign boards and trucks with electronic signs cautioning motorists about the work that was going on.
