Passerby Called Hero For Alerting FDL Resident Of Fire

An alert passerby is credited with saving the life of a Fond du Lac resident Thursday. The passerby noticed a fire in the 2^nd story of a home located on 7^th St., and banged on the door, waking the occupant on the 1^st floor up, giving them time to escape. 

When Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue crews arrived, they encountered heavy fire and smoke exiting the 2^nd story windows. There were no occupants on the second floor, and crews were able to extinguish the fire. A dog that was located inside was given CPR and oxygen but did not survive. A cat is also unaccounted for.

Chief Peter O’Leary said “the citizen who stopped and alerted the resident is a hero…his selfless action undoubtedly changed the outcome for the person inside.” Assisting at the scene were the FDL Police Department, Red Cross, Alliant Energy, City of FDL Building Inspector and the FDL Humane Society. The fire remains under investigation, but the structure is deemed uninhabitable as of Thursday.
