–Eric Thames scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Cardinals pitcher Bud Norris in the eighth inning as the Brewers took the first game of their three-game series in St. Louis Monday night. Lorenzo Cain had three hits, while Christian Yelich and Ryan Braun each drove in two runs in the win. Braun blasted home run #16 on the season in the second inning off of Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty. Corbin Burnes picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 7-0 on the year. Milwaukee is now 1 & ½ games behind the Cubs in the NL Central and holds a three game lead on St. Louis for the top NL Wild Card spot. MLB News:

For the third time this year, and second time this month, Christian Yelich has been named the National League “Player of the Week”. Yelich opened last week by hitting for the cycle for the second time this season. He also blasted a three-run homer on Sunday that sailed 439 feet. For the week, Yelich hit .544 with 12 hits, seven runs scored, two home runs and seven RBI.

NFL:

Packers defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson had surgery Sunday night in Washington for what Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said is a “significant” injury and will miss the rest of the year. Wilkerson was taken off the field in Sunday’s loss to the Redskins wearing an air cast after taking a hit from a teammate. Wilkerson signed a one-year deal with Green Bay this offseason, and had started all three games with a total of five tackles.

College Football:

The Badgers are on a bye this week, but their first game back in action next Saturday will be another game under the lights. The Big Ten announced Monday Wisconsin’s game against Nebraska at Camp Randall Stadium on October 6th will be a 6:30 pm kickoff and will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The Huskers are 0-3 and host 1-3 Purdue on Saturday.
