>>Packers’ Last Draft Choice First To Sign

(Green Bay, WI)  —  The last player taken by the Green Bay Packers in April’s draft is the first to sign a contract with the team.  The agreement with outside linebacker Jonathan Garvin of the University of Miami was announced by the team Tuesday.  Garvin was the 242nd player chosen in the 2020 NFL Draft.  The Packers still have eight more drafted players to get signed up.  Garvin is young – he doesn’t turn 21 until late July.  In his final two seasons he recorded 10-and-a-half sacks and 26 tackles for loss.

 

>>Forward Madison FC Resumes Training With Small Group First

(Madison, WI)  —  Health and safety precautions will be followed as Forward Madison resumes training effective today (Wednesday).  The team says the precautions include taking players’ temperatures both before they leave home and when they arrive at Breese Stevens Field.  Players will be wearing masks, contact will be minimized by using separate entrances and exits, equipment will be sanitized between groups and there will be mandatory handwashing stations.  There will be multiple sessions each day so all 20 players on the team’s roster can workout while limiting the size of the groups working at one time.

 

>>Departure Of Punter-Kicker Wilcox:  “Not My Choice At All”

(Madison, WI)  —  More details are coming to light about the departure of U-W punter-kicker Blake Wilcox – at one time rated one of the top-three high school kickers in the nation.  Wilcox says he got a call May 15th informing him he wouldn’t have a roster spot this fall.  Wilcox says it wasn’t his choice, “at all.”  He expected to be in the battle for the starting punting job.  Wilcox says he did take a three-week leave of absence from the program at the beginning of winter workouts in January.  He says he tried to stay in touch, but it appears the Badger staff thought he might not return.  Wilcox plans to enter the transfer protocol, but also says he might just stay in Madison where he is invested academically and socially.

 

>>Russell Wilson to Co-Host ESPY Awards From Seattle-Area Home

(Seattle, WA)  —  Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, W-N-B-A guard Sue Bird and World Cup star Megan Rapinoe will host a  remote broadcast of the ESPY’s next month.  The virtual award show set for June 21st on ESPN will celebrate heroism and humanitarianism this year instead of the top athletes.  All three hosts live in the Seattle area and Bird and Rapinoe are partners.  Former Wisconsin Badger Wilson is married to singer Ciara and she is expected to make an appearance, too.  The Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, Pat Tillman Award for Service, and Jimmy V Award for Perseverance will be among the honors presented.

 

>>Time Growing Short If MLB Is To Start By Fourth Of July

(New York, NY)  —  Time is growing short if Major League Baseball is going to start its shortened season by the Fourth of July.  The league and the players’ union are still trying to reach an agreement on salary and revenue issues.  It appears they would need some kind of resolution by the end of next week if they want to restart a shortened spring training by the middle of June.

 

>>NBA Hasn’t Given Up, But EuroLeague Cancels Rest Of Its Season

(Barcelona, ES)  —  The National Basketball Association is still working on a resumption of its season in July, but another major league is calling it off.  EuroLeague Basketball canceled the rest of the 2019-2020 regular season and the EuroCup due to the coronavirus pandemic.  No winners or awards will be chosen.  The EuroLeague says it will start its next season at the end of September.
