DHS Monitors Latest Omicron Variant

Health experts at the Department of Health Services are observing a new COVID-19 mutation. It’s a variant of the Omicron virus, and Dr. Ryan Westergaard says it remains to be seen if cases of COVID will continue to trend downward.

“Whether the new variation, if it takes hold, will cause that decline to occur more slowly is something that’s been theorized. But we won’t know until we observe it.”

Dr. Westergaard says that so far, it seems to show similar transmission rates and symptoms to Omicron. Several cases have been detected in Wisconsin.
