Addiction stigma awareness event planned for Fond du Lac

The stigma surrounding addiction remains a significant barrier to effective treatment, support, and recovery for individuals experiencing substance use disorders. Addressing stigma requires education, awareness, and advocacy to promote understanding that addiction is a treatable medical condition, not a character flaw.
Substance use disorders are common and affect all communities, including Fond du Lac County. In the last four years, 2021–2024, Fond du Lac County has lost 72 individuals to overdose deaths.
Initiatives that promote empathy, reduce judgment, and support treatment and harm reduction strategies are crucial in fighting stigma and supporting individuals on their path to recovery.
“It takes all of us to make a difference. When our community comes together for events like this, we send a clear message that compassion and understanding are stronger than stigma,” said Amber Kilawee, Executive Director of the Fond du Lac County United Way.
Substance use disorders can lead to serious health issues such as liver disease, cardiovascular problems, mental health disorders, and increased risk of infectious diseases. Misconceptions and stigma have left many people afraid to talk about their experiences or to seek help.
“Stigma keeps too many people from reaching out for help. By opening up conversations and showing support, we can break down those barriers and make it easier for individuals and families to take steps toward healing and recovery,” said Jeanette Morales, former Drug Free Communities of Fond du Lac Coordinator.
Fond du Lac County Health Department, The Gratitude Club, Drug Free Communities of Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac County Department of Health Services, and Community Medical Services (CMS), are collaborating to host the 3rd Annual Stigma Awareness Event to unite the community in raising awareness about stigma and the barriers it creates to individuals seeking recovery. Recovery is for everyone, and it’s important to support healing. Join us in eliminating stigma.
