Appleton man in custody after hours long stand-off

A man in Appleton is in custody after holding police at bay at an area apartment complex yesterday.

The standoff started at around 1 PM when officers were sent to the 1200 block of east Northland Avenue for a disturbance. The people reporting the disturbance told police that a man there was suicidal and had a gun.

When police arrived the man yelled out more than once that he would shoot at police.

The apartment building was evacuated and the City SWAT team was deployed. A crisis negotiator made contact with the 41-year-old man and eventually talked him into coming out and surrendering around 4:30. He was transported to a local hospital for care.
