Black Bear spotted passing through Fond du Lac County

Fond du Lac County has a somewhat rare visitor passing through the area.

Yesterday a black bear was spotted on the grounds of the Rolling Meadows Golf Course.

While habitat in Fond du Lac County isn’t conducive for bears, they can sometimes be seen passing through, looking for a suitable environment to continue a life of their own as they leave the area where they were born and raised.

At a couple years old, bears are often driven away from their mothers to go find their own
territory. In doing so, they can travel over great distances to find a place, often finding themselves wandering into populated areas.
Last year a black bear was seen in the village of Rosendale. At that time a DNR ranger and Rosendale Police tracked the bear as it passed through and then left it alone once it was out of the area.

Golf course officials closed down the part of the course where the bear was and told people to leave it alone as they watched it from a distance. At some point yesterday the bear was seen taking a nap in a grove of trees. The hopes are that the bear will continue on it’s way overnight.

Residents are urged not to leave food scraps in uncovered garbage out in an area that may attract the bear.
DNR officials say if you come in contact with a bear, to not panic, raise your arms to appear larger and speak to the bear in a stern, but calm voice to drive it away.
