KFIZ Sports Coverage of the Onwunili Decision

KFIZ Sports has been following the story of Campbellsport Track Athlete Josh Onwunili who was deemed ineligible by the WIAA to compete for state because of his time living in Ghana. The WIAA rule states a student is eligible for interscholastic competition only at the school within whose attendance area where his parents reside.  KFIZ Sports learned that Congressman Glenn Grothman and State Representative Jerry O’Connor were both involved recently working with the US Embassy to get the required documents on Onwunili’s father’s visa.

His name has been official entered in the 100 and 200 meter races and the 4×100 relay team by coach Derek Toshner in hopes he gets the go ahead. Onwunili is considered to be one of the fastest athletes in the state. Regionals begin next week with Sectionals on Thursday.

Late Friday afternoon KFIZ Sports Director Chuck Freimund got word the Onwunili will be eligible to participate in the state championships for track.

KFIZ Sports Director Chuck Freimund was the first to visit with Josh Onwunili and his coach Derek Toshner after the announcement.
