Cardinals Skate To State

The Fond du Lac boys hockey team punched their ticket to the state tournament in Madison with a 6-4 win over Mequon Homestead on Friday night at the Mullett Ice Center in Hartland.  After falling behind 1-0 early, the Cardinals scored three first period goals in a matter of 2:05 to grad a 3-1 lead.  Ben Pertl, Ty Rebedew, and Kyle Dunn got pucks past goalie Killian Martin in that stretch.  Homestead dominated the 2nd period scoring a pair of goals to knot it at 3-3 heading into the 3rd period.  The Highlanders Evan Heimerl scored early in the 3rd period to put Fondy down 4-3, but seconds later Jack Nejedlo scored on a slap shot above the right face-off circle to even it up at 4.  Nejedlo added the go ahead goal with 2:59 left after Fondy goalie Charlie Blagoue stone Homestead’s Ryan Stendler on a breakway, which turned into a Fondy breakout.  Nejedlo completed the hat trick with an empty goal with less than 1:30 left.  The win improves Fond du Lac to 22-3-2 on the season.  They will face Superior in the State Quarterfinals at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison on Thursday night at 8:15pm.  You’ll hear that game on News-Talk 1450 KFIZ.  Coverage begins at 7:45pm with the Backyard Grill Pregame Show.
