Cause of plane crash opening day of AirVenture listed as “not determined”

Federal investigators have released a preliminary report regarding the plane crash just south of EAA AirVenture during the event’s opening day that killed both men on board.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the cause of the July 22 crash was listed as not determined in its release.

Officials say the pilot was cleared to land and was completing a turn to approach the runway when it went down in a field about 1 1/2 miles south of the runway.

The airplane departed Trenton Mercer Airport in Trenton, New Jersey, just after 7 a.m. that Morning, landing at the Hartford Municipal Airport, in Hartford, Wisconsin. Authorities say the airplane departed Hartford around 11:45 AM, crashing at 12:15 PM, bursting into flames.
