City of Fond du Lac Police Investigates Negligent Discharge of a Firearm

On Sunday, May 25, 2025, the Fond du Lac Police Department responded to a report of a gunshot in the 100 block of Central Avenue.  The investigation determined that a negligent discharge of a rifle had occurred inside a residence, resulting in property damage to a neighboring home.  A 42-year-old Fond du Lac man will be referred to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office for a charge of endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon, a misdemeanor offense.

Chief Aaron Goldstein emphasized the importance of firearm responsibility and stated, “Firearm safety is non-negotiable.  Accidental discharges, particularly when handling or cleaning firearms can have serious or even life-threatening consequences.  Following fundamental safety rules, such as treating every firearm as if it’s loaded, pointing the muzzle in a safe direction, and keeping your finger off the trigger helps prevent tragic, avoidable accidents.”

At approximately 8:48 p.m., FDLPD Officers were dispatched to the area of Central Avenue and Morris Street after a homeowner reported hearing a loud noise followed by damage to their home and windows. Upon investigation, Officers found evidence that a projectile had traveled from a neighboring residence, striking the caller’s home.

Initial attempts to contact the occupant of the suspect residence were unsuccessful. Out of an abundance of caution, Officers deployed a drone to ensure the safety of anyone inside. Shortly thereafter, the resident contacted dispatch directly and voluntarily cooperated with the investigation. He admitted to the negligent discharge of a rifle within his home.

No injuries were reported and no further details are available at this time.  This case will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
