City of Fond du Lac unveils improvements at city parks

The City of Fond du Lac hosted two ribbon cutting ceremonies Friday, November 8, 2024, to celebrate new improvement projects at McDermott Park, McKinley Park, Russell Park and Buttermilk Creek Park.

“The City of Fond du Lac is thrilled to share these newly updated parks with our community,” shared City Council President Tiffany Brault. “These additions to our City emphasize our commitment to providing residents with welcoming spaces to gather, play and enjoy the outdoors.”

Funding for the majority of the City’s park enhancement projects was secured through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, which accelerated the number of enhancements the City was able to undertake. The improvements to Buttermilk Creek Park were made possible through the City’s partnership with playground equipment supplier BCI Burke, who completed all playground installations.

McDermott Park is now outfitted with a synthetic ice rink, a new community gathering space – including a pergola, and new landscaping. The rink will be free for the community’s use, and is anticipated to open the week of Thanksgiving. The landscaping improvements were based on plans completed by the Friends of McDermott Park. McKinley Park, Russell Park and Buttermilk Creek Park received new playground infrastructure.

“The City has heard from residents that continuing to enhance parks and gathering spaces is a top priority,“ said Parks Superintendent John Redmond. “We are excited for residents to begin enjoying these free amenities. Especially the McDermott Park ice rink, which we anticipate opening just in time for the holiday season.”

With the completion of these projects, the City of Fond du Lac encourages residents to continue to enjoy McDermott Park, McKinley Park, Russell Park and Buttermilk Creek Park. More information about Fond du Lac’s city parks is available at https://www.fdl.wi.gov/parks/parks/
