City Of Juneau Shuts Down Due To Gas Leak
Residents in nearly 1,000 homes in the city of Juneau and the surrounding area went to bed Wednesday night without natural gas service, due to a gas leak that occurred late Wednesday afternoon.
At around 2:30 pm on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, a traffic crash occurred on STH 26 near the airport, about 1 mile north of Juneau. The crash caused damage to a natural gas pipe above the ground, creating a significant leak of natural gas. The accident forced authorities to shut gas off to the city of Juneau, while also temporarily shutting off power.
A warming shelter was set up at Horicon High School for residents who were going to be without heat, and was expected to remain open into Thursday morning.
Alliant Energy said they anticipated that the repairs would last at least 8 hours, and were expected to start arriving at homes early Thursday morning to re-light pilot lights in homes.
