Concern Over How Tuition Cut Would Be Funded
The State Senate Minority Leader says she’s interested in hearing how the Governor proposes to cut tuition for students in the UW-System. Jennifer Shilling says the UW-System is still trying to recover from the cuts in the last state budget so further cuts to reduce tuition would be devastating. She says over the past few years nearly $1 billion in funding has been cut to universities and technical colleges in the state. She says UW officials are requesting an increase in funding in the next state budget. She says they want about a $42 million increase following the $250 million cut in the last budget. Shilling says one conversation she would like to have is about reducing student debt. She says nearly one million people owe a combined $19 billion in student debt.
