Congressional Art Winner Named

U.S. Representative Tom Petri announced the winner of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition at a reception in Fond du Lac on Saturday, April 27.  This year’s winner is Rachel Rohe from Neenah High School for her drawing entitled “Sunglasses.”

The annual Art Competition encourages high school artists in each congressional district to submit paintings, drawings, collages, prints, mixed media, computer generated art and photography.  Judging for the Sixth District Art Competition was done by a panel of local area artists.

“I’m always impressed at the young talent we have here in the Sixth District,” said Petri.  “This year we had 60 submissions from 19 schools, and each piece was unique and made the competition very close.

“Rachel’s drawing will be a fitting representation of the talent in the Sixth District and will hopefully inspire other young creative minds for the future.  I congratulate her on her winning submission.”

Rachel’s work will be sent to Washington, D.C. to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.  Rachel and her family will also be invited to go to Washington on June 26 for a national reception to honor winning artists from across the country.

Finalists from Wisconsin’s Sixth District also include: Mikala Piller from Neenah High School who received the Merit Award; Noah Mitchelson from Homestead High School in Mequon who received the Jurors Award; and Honorable Mentions Michelle Stepniewski from Wautoma High School, and Andrew DiSalvo and Jaryd Schmitz both from St. Mary’s Springs in Fond du Lac.
