Congressman Petri Talks About Need To Sustain Highway Trust Fund

Congressman Tom Petri made an appeal yesterday
before the House to find a viable way to sustain the Highway Trust Fund. The
House passed a bill that will pay for current surface transportation provisions
through May of next year, but Petri says the Highway Trust Fund will likely run
out of money next month. He says Congress was kicking the can down the road
again, avoiding one crisis while setting up another. The federal lawmaker from Fond du Lac says the
Highway Trust Fund was self sufficient for close to 50 years, but that’s no
longer the case. Although he supported the passage of the bill before the house
yesterday, he said they need to take a look at a better way to fund the trust
fund. The House passed the bill by a vote of 367 to 55. The Senate is
considering its own version of the legislation. To see Petri’s floor speech
