Consumer Call to Action: Following Storm Damage, Report Violations of Do Not Call Registry

Recent severe weather damage in Wisconsin has resulted in some businesses soliciting consumers through phone calls to offer repair services. However, it is important for consumers – especially those whose phone numbers are on the Do Not Call Registry – to know their rights and what to do if they receive these calls.

When a consumer adds their phone number to the Do Not Call Registry, businesses are prohibited from making unsolicited sales calls or texts to that number. Note: this includes calls to offer (appointments for) free demonstrations, surveys, evaluations, and estimates of roofs, windows, siding, etc. These are considered schemes tied to the solicitation of goods and services and they are not allowed to be made to consumers on the Do Not Call Registry.

While there may be a need for repairs in communities impacted by recent storms, it is important that legitimate businesses abide by the Do Not Call Registry. Not only are businesses required to do so, it also helps consumers know that the sales calls they do receive (while their phone number is registered) may not be trustworthy.

DATCP is calling on Wisconsin consumers whose phone numbers are on the Do Not Call Registry to report any sales calls or texts they did not consent to, especially those related to severe weather damage repairs. This will help deter dishonest businesses, bring honest ones into compliance with state law, and protect other Wisconsin consumers.

To check if their phone number is on the Do Not Call Registry, or to add their number to the Registry, consumers can call (1-888) 382-1222 from the phone they wish to check/register. To learn more, visit NoCall.wi.gov.
