DNR monitors fish kill in Sheboygan River
The agency announced this afternoon staff noticed a leaking fertilizer tank in Sheboygan County.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource staff say they will continue to monitor a fertilizer spill that resulted in a fish kill on the Sheboygan River.
The agency has not given an estimate of how many fish were killed in the incident.
DNR staff were responding to a fish kill in Sheboygan County Thursday when they noticed a leaking fertilizer tank at Majestic Meadows Dairy, according to a statement released Friday.
“The fertilizer entered the water via a drain tile which discharges to an unnamed tributary connected to the Sheboygan River,” the agency said.
The farm stopped the fertilizer release, according to the agency. DNR staff worked with the farm to prevent future impacts.
There have been multiple spills on farms reported in the past six months across Wisconsin.
Fish were killed along a five-mile stretch in a manure spill last fall on the border of Taylor and Clark counties. Multiple spills have happened at a large livestock farm in central Wisconsin, one spilled around 100,000 gallons of manure. Another, in Trempealeau County, affected two unnamed streams to Beaver Creek, and staff responded after an anonymous tip.
