Do Not Say Yes
If someone calls you up that you don’t know and asks “Can you hear me” don’t answer “Yes.” Fond du Lac Police Officer Erik Foster says it is a scam and the person at the other end of the line is trying to get you to say yes so they can record your answer. Later that is edited to make it sound like you authorized the purchase of vacation packages, cruises, warranties, and other big ticket items. He says it is best to hang up. He says if they ask for personal information, don’t give it to them. He says legitimate institutions like banks and utilities already have your information. Wisconsin’s Better Business Bureau recommends using your caller ID to screen calls, making a note of the number in case you have to report it, and screening your bank and credit card statements regularly for unauthorized purchases.
