Dodge County officer reportedly shot multiple times

New information was released in the officer shot incident that occurred near the city of Columbus Sunday, June 14, 2026.

Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt held a press conference where he stated the officer was shot several times, but his bullet proof vest stopped all but one of the shots from reaching the officer’s body.

Schmidt referenced protective plates that are added to the bullet proof vest that add additional protection from certain high velocity rifles.

He went on to add that due to costs, only 2/3rds of deputies are outfitted with the plates due to the cost of them and asked for help from the public to allow them to be able to budget additional plates for the rest of the deputies.

The suspect in the shooting eventually went on to take his own life during a standoff with law enforcement.
