DOT’s Thompson Tells KFIZ Trucking Industry Keeps Moving

We’re almost 6 weeks into the “Safer At Home” order that was issued by Governor Evers. And while its wreaked havoc in just about every facet of business in the state, one industry has had no choice but to keep moving.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary-Designee Craig Thompson tells KFIZ news the early moves they made, to keep the trucking industry going in the state, have paid off. One of the biggest short-term changes was raising the 80,000 lb weight restriction up to 88,000 and then to 90,000 lbs, so those who supply product to grocery stores, could help keep the supply chain flowing.

Thompson said there have been challenges keeping all those trucks on the road, most notably not having enough rest stops open in Wisconsin and neighboring states. And while certain rules and regulations have been adjusted in the short term, Thompson doesn’t see them lasting much longer. He said once they feel supplies can be kept at normal levels, they’ll go back to the normal weight restrictions.
