Drunk driver crashes into police cruiser on a separate traffic stop

A Calumet County Sheriff’s Office Deputy had a close call Wednesday morning, July 9, 2025, when, during a traffic stop, his patrol vehicle was rear-ended by another car that subsequently rolled onto its roof.

The deputy sustained minor injuries and according to a post on the department’s facebook page, will be back on duty after a short recovery period.

The driver of the striking vehicle showed signs of impairment and was taken into custody for Operating a Motor Vehicle while Intoxicated Causing Injury.

The department says the incident underscores two critical safety reminders for all road users:

Don’t drive impaired and move over for emergency vehicles when you see flashing lights on the side of the road. Not only is this respectful but it’s the law which requires drivers to move out of the lane closest to stopped law enforcement vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks, and utility or highway maintenance vehicles that have their warning lights activated.
