FDL Sheriff’s K9 Iro ready to get back to work after shooting injuries

Great news for the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office and the recently formed fan club of the K9 Iro who was injured in a shooting last year.

The sheriff’s office says K9 Iro completed the recertification course needed to reinstate him to working as a police K9 for the department. An incredible feat considering the injuries Iro sustained and the months of rehabilitation he went through.

Sheriff’s Office Captain Chris Randall said “Iro’s journey to return to duty has been a tremendous challenge, and at the same time, a powerful inspiration and that the community support and outreach has been nothing short of incredible.”

On October 14th of 2023, Iro’s handler Deputy Blaine Evans was responding to a domestic incident in the City of Fond du Lac when he noticed the suspect in the matter was returning to the residence. Evans performed a pit maneuver on the vehicle and the man ended up crashing into a garage. He then exited his vehicle with a rifle and a shootout ensued, ultimately leaving Iro with several gunshot wounds.

Once the situation was contained, Iro was rushed to Blue Pearl Pet Hospital in Appleton where he underwent emergency surgery for his wounds.
