Fire forces 28 residents to evacuate at assisted living facility

A City of Waupun Police officer is being credited for keeping a fire at an assisted living facility from spreading by using a fire extinguisher last night.

At about 7 PM, workers at the Prairie Ridge Assisted Living Facility at 819 Wilcox Street noticed smoke coming from a light fixture in the ceiling of a common area of the building.

They immediately pulled the fire alarm and started to evacuate residents from the building.

Waupun Police and Fire Departments, First Responders and Lifestar Ambulance responded to the scene with an officer being the first to get there. Using a fire extinguisher, the officer was able to get the fire out and keep it from spreading into the ceiling area.

Waupun Fire fighters got on scene and confirmed the fire was out and then started working on ventilating smoke out of the building while the other departments on scene worked to move all 28 residents to a different portion of the building not effected by the fire.

After about an hour, all residents were allowed to return to their rooms.
